Gloucester Docks - Competition Winning Painting

This painting won 1st place at the 2025 Gloucester ‘Art in the City' plein air competition.

I chose to paint a view looking though the swing bridge at Gloucester Docks. I loved the way the scene sliced together, with the water and buildings providing different horizontal and vertical backgrounds to the bridge. I was careful not the make the bridge the dominant aspect of the scene, keeping the colours subdued and receding against it's surrounds, allowing the bits inbetween to come to the fore. The judges loved the composition, water and light on the bridge and the buildings behind and awarded this painting 1st place.

This oil painting on 3mm canvas board measures 30x24cm and is framed by Period Frames London. Overall framed size is 37x29cm.
