On a scorching day on the River Dart, cows take shelter beneath the leaves of a large oak, while the baking field of wheat shimmers behind them. I loved the horizontal bands in this scene, and focused on this in the composition - the water, the shade under the riverside foliage, the strip of wheatfield, then the rising hills and sky.
Underpainted with liquid charcoal, I slowly built up washes of colour before applying thicker paint, capturing the intensity of the heat and light on the day.
